Twenty-Two Issues Relating to Skills Gap Analysis

These issues are critical to assessing the skills gaps in your region. For many of these issues, we have prepared data specific to your region to help speed the process of analysis. In some cases, information will need to be collected locally. The How-To Guide will assist you through the analytical process. Be sure to look at the Maps view book (on left) for a view of statewide maps by region and to look for individual region maps at various points on this page.

Demand Side

  1. Industries employing the largest numbers of workers.
  2. Industries paying highest average weekly wages.
  3. Industries growing the fastest in terms of jobs, wages, and establishments.
  4. Industries projected to offer an increasing number of jobs.
  5. Industries in this region with a comparative advantage (location quotients).
  6. Industries which seem to be building toward a competitive advantage (shift-share).
  7. Which industries are positioned to capitalize on regional, national and/or global trends?
  8. Which industries have been targeted by state or local economic developers for future growth?
  9. Which occupations are most important for the key industries identified above?
  10. Projected employment by occupation in key industries and overall.
  11. Compensation levels and trends for critical occupations with Midwest and National comparisons.
  12. Identify training, education and skills needed for critical occupations.
  13. What specific licenses, certifications or other formal requisites are necessary for entry into and continued practice in the critical occupations?
  14. Which occupations in which industries appear now to be in shortage and in what quantity?
  15. Which are the region's specific employers by six-digit NAICS industry code? How many workers do they employ? Where are they located? Who is an appropriate person to contact at that firm?

Supply Side Issues

  1. How many workers in the area now possess the qualifications necessary to fill jobs in the critical occupations that have been identified?
  2. What is the age structure of those workers?
  3. What is the present employment status of these workers?
  4. What is the present and anticipated future "output" of education and training institutions that prepare entrants into the critical occupations?
  5. What happens to the graduates and other completers of educational and training programs offered by Indiana institutions and organizations?
  6. What is the geographical mobility of Indiana workers by occupation, age, and educational attainment?
  7. How much money does it take for a family to be financially self-sufficient in Indiana and its regions?
