Census Commuting Patterns
Census data have traditionally provided the most insightful and comprehensive view of commuting. First, the question is geared to solicit that information specifically (unlike the derivative we use from the annual tax data). Second, it allows us to view commuting across borders into specific communities of other states. However, beginning with Census 2010, commuting data are not available out of the decennial census, but alternative data are available from the American Community Survey (ACS).
Current ACS Five-Year Estimates
Note: The next iteration of the 5-year ACS county commuting flows (using the 2016-2020 ACS) should be released by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2023.
