About the Statistical Areas

Metropolitan (MSA) and micropolitan statistical areas are delineated by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB). These definitions are typically updated every two years using the most recent Census Bureau population estimates.

STATS Indiana adopts new statistical area delineations based on the implementation schedule of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). As a result, updated statistical area definitions do not appear on STATS Indiana until BLS implements them into their Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program.

This page documents each vintage of the statistical area delineations used by STATS Indiana since the most recent decennial census.

July 2023

The July 2023 delineations were the first set of statistical area definitions released following the 2020 decennial census.
