About the Statistical Areas

Metropolitan (MSA) and micropolitan statistical areas are delineated by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Updates to these definitions are generally made every two years based on the most recent Census Bureau population estimates.

STATS Indiana follows the implementation schedule of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). New statistical area delineations are not reflected on STATS Indiana until BLS implements these changes into their Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program. View the BLS implementation plans »

An important note: Metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas in the Anywhere USA Profile come directly from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey, which uses the 2020 statistical area definitions for the 2022 ACS data. Be aware that this vintage differs from the statistical area definitions used elsewhere on STATS Indiana.

This page lists the changes that have been implemented in each vintage of the statistical area delineations used on STATS Indiana.
