About Vital Statistics Data

Births and deaths are tabulated each year by the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH). Indiana is part of a federal-state cooperative with the National Center for Health Statistics so that the collection and publication of these data are standardized across all 50 states.

Variables

Births with demographics and deaths by cause of death

  • Birth rates, also called crude birth rates, are live births per 1,000 population
  • Death rates are age-adjusted death rates per 100,000. Age-adjusted rates allow one to compare death rates between geographies (learn more )

Important Data Notes

  • Births and deaths are based on residence.
  • Teen births are those to mothers age 10-19.
